Gutsy Kombucha: An Organic Kombucha Powered by Plants

Among the contributors to this growing market, there is Gutsy Kombucha. Founded in 2017, the Montreal-based company has become a leader thanks to its ecological philosophy and its low-sugar, long-fermenting recipe.

It all started in Nicaragua

It all started when Pierrich Picard went on a surfing trip to Nicaragua. Searching for peace amongst the loud noises of tourism, he eventually found himself in a little town called Gigante. This is where he discovered Party Wave, a small seaside cafe where he tried his first glass of kombucha. Becoming friends with the owner, Robert, he shared with Pierrich all his knowledge about the fermentation process necessary to prepare this effervescent drink. Upon returning to Montreal, he was happy to see that kombucha was available, except it was nothing like the one tasted in South America. Unhappy with what he found on the shelves, Pierrich suggests to Robert to start their own brand. Melanie, an experienced naturopath that’s been practising for more than 10 years, then joins the team to create the first kombucha powered by plants. Through this journey and these friendships, Gutsy was finally born, a healthy kombucha, low in sugar and powered by plants with a thousand virtues!

A healthy and flavoursome kombucha

With the mission of brewing the healthiest and tastiest kombucha on the market, each flavour is made only from organic and raw ingredients, no preservatives or additives, and never filtered or pasteurized, so it keeps all its benefits. Gutsy kombucha also undergoes an extended brewing period of three to four months (as the old fashion way) to create a better, more nutritious product.

A company that cares about the environment 

To minimize its ecological footprint, and since recycling was deficient at that time, Gutsy decided to initially offer its kombucha on tap by building some great relationships with local retailers in order to install filling stations in Quebec’s zero-waste stores. The company quickly became the largest on tap kombucha producer in Quebec and that over 90% of which is now consumed in refilled bottles. With the growth of the company, Gutsy often received demands for a smaller and on-the-go format. Searching for the best fit, the company decided that aluminum cans were the best format for the product because they provide a more stable environment for kombucha and are more likely recycled and more recyclable compared to glass bottles. The can format therefore corresponded to the company’s core values while providing the same great taste that customers have been used to on tap.

More than 550 retailers

Today, after four years of passion for this fermented drink, Gutsy continues to innovate while keeping in mind its goal of having a positive impact on health and the environment. Its kombucha is available in eight unique flavours in more than 550 stores in Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick, of which more than 150 are bulk sales locations. More recently, the company has launched two sugar-free varieties to offer an even healthier beverage. Gutsy is also giving 1% of its sales in cans to organizations that have a positive impact on the environment. And that’s just the beginning!
